4 Tips Guaranteed to Help the New Jersey Sandwich Generation with Balancing Family Life

Better health habits have prompted the population to live longer than what was previously expected years ago –great news indeed!

And while people continue to live longer, well into their senior years; seemingly there will always be a need for someone to help out, care for, and spend time with those elderly family members.

If you currently find yourself in a situation of having an elderly family member, more than likely a parent(s), then you are at least somewhat familiar with the encumbrances that come with caring for that loved one.

In addition to taking on the burden that comes with caring for your aging loved one, you may have children that you are caring for as well. If that is the case, then you, my friend are a part of what is called “the sandwich generation.”

The sandwich generation; it’s the name coined for individuals who have the obligation of caring for an elderly parent(s) while simultaneously caring for their child(ren) as well.

If you are recognized as being a part of the sandwich generation, then you are very much aware of the tremendous amount of stress that comes with being pressed for time, being financially strapped and being exhausted all in the midst of trying to harmonize home life between family members and balancing responsibilities with elderly loved ones.

Here at Sisters Helping Seniors, we would like to give you some tips to help you with balancing your busy schedule so that you can make yourself available to the ones you love and also have time for yourself as well.

1. Plan ahead with your children:

Make sure to encourage your children to get into the habit of saving early. Adult children should contribute to a retirement plan even if you are still financially supporting them. When your kids have to move back home with you, it may seem tough to think about charging them rent but establishing the boundaries of finances is essential to managing multiple generations on a household budget.

2. Hold family meetings:

Caregiving doesn’t have to equate to you having the sole responsibility of handling all of the duties. Create a weekly list of what needs to be done, and then split up the list, assigning tasks to everyone. Creating an action plan for larger tasks that may come in the future (such as selling Mom’s home) may help to ensure that projects will run smoother with less room for problems.

3. Do not forget to take care of yourself:

Providing care to you –the caregiver, is a fundamental part of making certain that everyone will continue to thrive. It is essential that you eat right, stay healthy and get sufficient rest so that you can be well. Make sure that you listen to your body and adhere to it’s demands. If you feel like you need rest, then slow down and do just that. Check with a healthcare professional or look into respite care to give yourself a chance to recuperate.

4. Ask for professional assistance:
